So yesterday was a pretty productive day – I taught two
lessons, one on geology and volcanoes, and the other on Canadian culture, where
I looked at each province and territory through their flag, and how the flag is
significant for each individual province.
I thought that it might be a little boring when I came up with the
concept, but once I started researching the individual flags, I found that
there were lots of culturally significant stories that came about, just from
looking at the flag. I believe the
senior year nursing students who had the pleasure of hearing my lecture did
enjoy it, especially when they were able to explain the significance of the
Sapmi flag.
I also had a student stop and sit with me while I was in
between classes and chat about his knowledge of history, and the history of the
Scandinavian people during the Second World War. He is a very keen student, and it was nice
that one of them finally sat down and had a real conversation with me – it helps
remind me that students can see their teachers as people, and not just
authority figures.
My inability to get a good night’s sleep is starting to
affect me in my day to day activities.
I’m not sure why I can’t sleep well at night, and I’m not going to bed
overly late or anything…I’ve been drinking tea and unwinding and all of that
stuff, and this is the first time in my life that I remember not being able to
sleep through the night. If anyone out
there has any suggestions, please fire them my way. I really can’t go on feeling like a zombie.
I had some very good feedback from Eva today about how my
lessons are progressing – it has given me the confidence I need to know that I can teach high school, and that when I
look for positions in the future that the sky really is the limit – being here
in Sweden has started to solidify who I am becoming as a teacher, and I feel
that once I am “unleashed” on May 12, I can really do anything.
I also want to say thanks to those of you who are reading
this who have given me the strength to be myself, and have supported me on this
educational journey.
More to come soon!
